Position: Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor (5 openings)

Description

The Department of Public Administration in the School of Government at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China, invites applications for five tenure-track Assistant Professor appointments to begin fall 2022. Excellent candidates will also be considered at associate level or higher (with tenure).

The Department of Public Administration currently offers a full complement of degrees from undergraduate to PhD as well as a professional master’s degree in public administration (MPA), which provide students with opportunities to specialize in local government management, public budgeting and finance, social policy, human resource management and urban planning. The department also houses the Center for Chinese Public Administration Research, which is a national-level public administration research institute sponsored by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. As one of the country’s oldest and best programs, the Department of Public Administration is consistently ranked 47th in the world for social policy & administration by the QS:

The tenure requirements for assistant professors usually include research, teaching and service. Within the 5/6-year tenure clock, successful candidates must demonstrate a record of outstanding publications in top peer-reviewed journals in the field (e.g. PAR, JPART, JPPAM, etc.), and evidence of significant research impact. The teaching load usually is two courses per semester, and responsibilities include instruction at the graduate and undergraduate levels, willingness to teach core and elective courses, satisfactory teaching evaluation, and interaction with students in advising their theses. Candidates are also expected to secure external funding as well as to actively engage in academic and professional services in the school and the community.

About School of Government at Sun Yat-sen University

The School of Government at Sun Yat-sen University, consisting of Department of Political Sciences and Department of Public Administration, has its origins in Guangdong College of Law and Politics which was founded in 1905. After a century of development, the school now has grown into the largest and most renowned research institution for public administration in South China, with 52 full-time faculty members, 10 postdoctoral fellows or researchers, and more than 1800 registered students at all levels (as of July 2021). Located in Guangzhou, one of the most dynamic and prosperous metropolitan areas in China, the school takes active part in all kinds of public activities serving the government and the society, and it plays a leading role in the policy-making, implementation and evaluation process in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Requirements

Applicants should have:

1. A PhD in Public Administration, Public Policy, Political Science or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment.

2. Demonstrated ability to independently conduct high-quality research and publish in top peer-reviewed journals in the field.

3. Demonstrated ability to electively teach 1-2 core courses either in English or Chinese, and to develop selective courses in their own field of expertise.

4. Keen interest in obtaining external funding.
